Luca's Story

Luca and his twin sister Maya were born extremely prematurely at 25 weeks. Luca has cerebral palsy. He needs an operation that is minimally invasive, but exclusively performed by a well-known surgeon in New Jersey. This surgery will help to lengthen the tendons in both his legs so that his feet can be placed flat on the ground; this will make his walking easier and less painful. Following the operation, Luca needs intensive physiotherapy to teach him how to walk with his ‘new’ legs. Besides this, Luca’s ultimate dream is to also help other children with cerebral palsy who are less fortunate, but experience similar struggles to his.

Through collaboration of an incredible team of musicians, the song “Luca’s World” was recorded in order to raise funds for these purposes. Please take a moment to meet Luca and to listen to his song. Luca is an extraordinary boy who brings light to everyone he encounters on his special journey – it is a privilege to be part of Luca’s world!

Luca's Journey

Luca and his twin sister Maya were born at 25 weeks, weighing around 700 grams each. Despite suffering a severe brain bleed and declared dead by his paediatrician a week after birth, Luca miraculously started breathing again.

Defying all odds, Luca continued to fight to survive and so started his incredible journey of life.

As a result of his injuries around birth, Luca has cerebral palsy – he is a spastic triplegic with both legs and one arm permanently stiff. Despite this, Luca continued to develop and thrive and approached his countless weekly therapies with tenacity, endurance and an incredible sense of humour. Luca managed to reach all his milestones in his own time and started mainstream schooling, but he did not develop the ability to walk.

After many years of crawling and always having to look up at the world from below, Luca was advised to start using a wheel chair, but our family refused. He continued to develop into an extremely intelligent, happy, confident and tenacious child who just approached his world from a different angle.

After many long years, at the age of 8 and a half, Luca miraculously managed to stand up one day and gave his first individual steps by himself! After all, it is his dream to play cricket for the Proteas one day!

After a very successful 3 week treatment program at the NAPA Centre for children with cerebral palsy in Los Angeles in 2016, he showed major improvement in walking. Luca is now a 9 year old boy that is walking by himself most of the time and looking the world straight in the eye, mostly with a twinkle in his own! However, due to the spasticity in his legs, Luca walks with great difficulty and pain because he can only walk on his toes in his right leg and his left foot has collapsed inwards.

In order to correct this, Luca needs an operation that is minimally invasive, but exclusively performed by Dr Roy Nuzzo in New Jersey. This surgery will help to lengthen the tendons in both his legs so that his feet can be placed flat on the ground; this will make his walking easier and less painful. Following the surgery, Luca will need another intensive rehabilitation treatment program at the NAPA Centre in Los Angeles to teach him to walk again on his “new” legs.

Luca is a child with incredible potential who is almost certainly destined to achieve great things in life. It is a privilege to be part of Luca’s world!

We are, therefore, raising funds to enable Luca to have the surgery in New Jersey and to follow that with a 3 week intensive therapy session at the NAPA Centre in Los Angeles. Any additional funds raised will be used to bring specialist therapists to South Africa to teach our physiotherapists how to better assist and enable the less fortunate children with cerebral palsy.
